Moses Max Tarnopolsky Paul
Born 1884 November 19, 1938

Moses Max Tarnopolsky was born in Rzhishchev, Ukraine in 1884. Moses was the son of Chaim and Sure (Sarah) Tarnopolsky ( born 01/10/1884 died 12/27/1974). He married Sonya (Sarah) Kutlerofsky probably in Ekaterinoslav (now Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine) and their first son Israel (Edward) was born there. Moses, Sarah and Israel embarked from Antwerp, Belgium and sailed for America aboard the Kroonland and arrived at Ellis Island on February 13, 1905.

It has been mentioned that the journey from the Ukraine took about three months, which probably included traveling from Dnepropetrovsk to Antwerp. At Ellis Island, Max listed his destination as A. Bermann located at 404 N. 8th Street in Philadelphia. Bermann is believed to be his uncle. Shortly after their arrival in Philadelphia, Moses changed his name to Max Paul. Sarah and Israel assumed the names of Sonya and Edward Paul.

Max was instrumental in helping other relatives escape persecution in Russia. Max’s letters describing the success he found in his new country encouraged other family members to immigrate to the United States. His brother Benjamin immigrated in 1920 and became a most prominent clothier in Philadelphia. Both Max and Benjamin were involved in a number of charities supporting oppressed countrymen in both Russia and the United States. Max’s mother immigrated in 1925 after the death of Max’s father in Russia.

Max turned over his business to his sons around 1930 and continued to assist them. His health began to fail and died suddenly on his way to Franklin Field to watch a football game on November 19, 1938.
